So, how exactly are people supposed to decorate their wands?

Your wand is like an extension of your self so decorate it how you see fit. Paint it, leave it plain-your magic will be tuning through it so make it yours :)

I always made them for other people. I used my own ecclectic style but some had me carve certain symbols or use birthstones only around hilt / handle. You will end up charging it with your energy for use so really it depends on your personal taste for decorations.

What I find is people decorate them based on their intended use, most newer practitioners will make wands for specific works like Healing. Which you don't have to do but you can if you so desire, if you want some ideas look up the magical meanings of colours, symbols, gems etc and do what suits your personal taste for your Wand, we can't decide what you should do with it, Be Creative have fun with it.

my wand as it is is a dark oak stick with red string attached to it. so in turn you dont have to decorate it is you dont feel to if you want to do it as you wish.

I just recently created one made from Hawthorn, which is abundant on my property. Each wood has different properties, so select wood (if it is wood; some use glass/ crystal wands) that will be most conducive to the energy you wish to send out. I am still deciding as to how I shall decorate it, though runes correspondent to it's purpose shall be carved upon it, as will a crystal attached to the tip. The key, Damula, is to personalise it and make it by essence, an extension of you. You are the one who shall be using it. Have fun, be creative, and Blessed Be.

I love oak (I used to own a woodworking business, hand tools only), but it's such a pain to work with. I find power tools are best and most efficient to work with such noble wood.
