Samhain is an old pagan festival that celabrates the harvest and the passing of the God into death and his eventual rebirth into a new life. It is also considered I believe to be the pagan new year. It is a time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest so communication with the spirits is easier then normal. The day we call halloween is derived from this concept since jackolanterns and the like were used to attract spirts makeing communication better. Ancestrial communication is celabrated on this day as well and feasts were held and food was left as offerings to these spirits and the Gods. The day was givin evil conotations by the christian church in an attempt to dennounce such spiritual practice as belonging to the devil.

Samhain is one of the most important holidays celebrated by Wiccans and by some other Pagans. It is the last harvest festival of the year. But more importantly it is the time when we remember our Ancestors and our Blessed Dead. There is an excellent article explaining both the history of Samhain and also what the modern concepts of Samhain include.
