It may have been referring to Astral Combat which is (I'm not very familiar with the subject so correct me if I'm wrong) protecting yourself from evil spirits or unwanted energy through the use of shields, circles, etc. This is done through the Astral Plane.

Yes physical combat magick is cliche and everything, banishing spirits and thugs that don't make physical changes in the world usually are legit, just use your discrepancy.

My friend said that she summoned energy in a ball and threw it at her friend. (They're witches) And the friend that got hit by it was sick.

That's referred to as a "psi ball" if I'm not mistaken (neopagan terms baffle my mind lol).

"Combat" means a battle/physical fight, so I'll go with that.

There are such things as magick wars--a war between two witches and usually the best, strongest and/or trickiest wins. Casting is also called "throwing" magick because the energy is typically sent toward a subject. Just as magick can be sent to help, it can be sent to harm.

Astrally energy can be charged, condensed and thrown in pure form (personal energy) as a means of self defense.

Dirty looks can sometimes feel like a shot of negative energy thrown at you. They're known as the "evil eye" or "malocchio" in Italy and are believed to cause anything from bad luck, to illness, to death. Italian and Romanian magick are reknown for their spur of the moment curses.

A good shield/protection is almost always worn by magickal practioners. Why would this be necessary if not to prevent attack?

All of this runs in the same category.

I could go on but I don't think any magickal practioner really likes this subject and for good reason. Too many people in this world fight just to fight, and magick is not a toy.

"Combat magick" is very cliche and personally I wouldn't use it.
