Moral codes and Behavior.
By: / Novice
Hello, I am cirrently working on my senior thesis for Highschool. My plan is to keep researching along the lines of the moral codes and culture of different groups and the effect it has on behavior. Ultimately my goal is to prove that an open or flexible moral code such as the Nine Noble Virtues (Asatru) which states positive aspects that people should embody, promotes more socially acceptable behavior than a rigid moral code such as the Ten Commandments which state things that one should or should not do.

If anybody could help me to find a jumping off point for my research or otherwise assist me it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

In any such code I think rather than the strict wording of the particular code you will find the difficulty instead to be the individual interpretation of each particular "law."

The nine noble virtues certainly leave a great deal open to interpretation, and one man's ideal of living to those virtues may well be vastly different from another's. Much as the commandments are viewed differently in different sects of christianity.

This is the reason that laws tend to be written very specifically, with attention payed to how they are later interpreted so as to provide consistency, or some semblance of it.

But this may be a jumping point for you. Compare the interpretation of religious commandments to the interpretatoin of secular law.

From the code of conduct you spoke of, are you showing that positive guidelines work better than negative? IE, - 'strive towards' so and so, rather than, 'do not' do so and so? Like a positive angle on parenting, where the positive is rewarded and the negative is ignored (not rewarded by even negative attention)?
