The Four Elements
By: Lady SilverVixen

The four elements also known as the Airts (pronounced “eights” and meaning wind) have been used throughout history from Egypt to Ireland and Scotland as well as many other countries. They have different names such as, guardians which is the physical personification of them, or some know them as just the elements. Most know the elements as Fire, Earth, Air and Water. In Egypt they were the four sons of Horus, or the four Goddesses that guarded the tombs. They also represent the four directions, North, South, East and West. North being Earth and representing night, winter, old age, the Crone, the sorcerer, wisdom and integration. East being Air representing dawn, spring, youth, the maiden goddess, the young god, thought and beginnings of all sorts. South being fire and representing noon, summer adulthood, the mother, the sun king, manifestation and action. And lastly, West being Water representing dusk, fall/harvest, parenthood, the queen, the judge, emotion and reaction.
Each element has its’ own color as well. Each tradition teaches a different color, just to name a few, in the Gardnerian Wicca tradition air-yellow, fire-red, water-blue, and earth-green. In Traditional wicca, air-red, fire-white, water-gray, earth-black.
There are four sacred tools that are associated to the elements as well. The ritual blade the athame is most commonly associated with Fire. Air is most commonly associated with the wand, water the chalice and earth the pentagram. Each has their own energy vibration and when aligned with the elements during ritual, these tools make wonderful focus points for directing energy.
