Meditation

Meditation is a three step process that leads to a state of consciousness that brings serenity, clarity, and bliss. Meditation is of great importance to your spiritual development. If you want to open up spiritually and contact your guides and helpers this is a must. Initially, when you first start to meditate, you will probably find it hard to quiet the mind, this is normal and happens to most. We bounce from one thought to another and follow with our emotional and physical reactions. The same thought can bring about diametrically opposite reactions at different times. This is the first step in Meditation and is the start of gaining control over the mind and thereby life. The procedure is deceptively simple and seems like it would be very easy to do, but there are few tasks more difficult to master.

The most amazing energy in our world is the human mind, we have such vast untapped potential which is blocked from our awareness by the constant stream of negative or unproductive thoughts. Meditation is about unlocking the door to release our true nature of positive and powerful potential. With a tranquil and calm mind our sense of well being will improve. Meditation is the best method to discover and release our peaceful and positive self.

The first stage of meditation is to stop distractions and make our mind clearer and more lucid. This can be accomplished by practising a simple breathing meditation. We choose a quiet place to meditate and sit in a comfortable position. We can sit in the traditional cross-legged posture or in any other position that is comfortable. If we wish, we can sit in a chair. The most important thing is to keep our back straight to prevent our mind from becoming sluggish or sleepy.

We sit with our eyes closed to partially closed and turn our attention to our breathing. It is a very important part of any meditation session and in order for a person to learn to relax properly they need to learn about how to keep their spine straight. When the spine is straight a person will find that the circulation of blood etc., around the body is much improved to their nerves etc., which in turn results in them remaining much more alert than before. Some find that they drift to sleep lying down, which is not our purpose. We breathe naturally, preferably through the nostrils, the tongue touches the upper palate (roof of mouth), without attempting to control our breath, and we try to become aware of the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils. This sensation is our object of meditation. It is important that any one who is taking up meditation learns how to take slow even breaths which comes through down in their diaphragm. We should try to concentrate on it to the exclusion of everything else.

At first, our mind will be very busy, and we might even feel that the meditation is making our mind busier; but in reality we are just becoming more aware of how busy our mind actually is. There will be a great temptation to follow the different thoughts as they arise, but we should resist this and remain focused single-pointedly on the sensation of the breath. If we discover that our mind has wandered and is following our thoughts, we should immediately return it to the breath. We should repeat this as many times as necessary until the mind settles on the breath.

Try and set yourself a minimum time that you want to meditate and try to stick to that as a minimum, but also stop before you get completely tired.

How do you all meditate ?

I mediate at least once a day in different ways. Sometimes it is right before bed, sometimes it is before and after I practice Yoga, and other times it is when I am sitting one my meditation rug. It is the size of a bath mat and is shaped like a leaf. I like to meditate for calming, to find answers, to gather energy, to take a break for something stressful, and to keep my mind happy :)
