Questions of a fool.
By:
I have attempted a large number of spells and 'mystic actions' (self-hypnotism, etc) And aside from a healing spell for my brother (which backfired spectacularly, gave him disentary on top of his pneumonia) I have had no reactions aside from some pins and needles when I try and focus energy. Am I just the real world equivalent of a magical null, or am I being punished for losing my way, or what?

It is very unlikely that your spell "back fired". Your brother would have got dysentery anyway! It is often the effect of other illness "lowering" the body's resistance.

If you are practicing magick just for results it is hard to make sure your results are valid, that is eliminate outside causes and make sure he change which has occurred is caused by your own manipulation of circumstances by your will.

However, if you are using magick and mysticism to get so-called spiritual experiences, this is much easier to validate- even if the technique is just activating a hidden part of your brain, or effecting your consciousness, there is still an effect from a technique.

The first step is to practice until you are blue in the face. When I first learned the LBRP I could not visualise the pentagrams in a blue flame, I practiced until I could do so. Over time (we are talking years) I have also noticed other effects of the ritual on the way I think and feel.

Don't give up, it comes easy to some, but for the rest of us we really have to put in the work. Magick is not some passing phase it is truly a path, that is one must walk it every day and one should practice every day- even if it is only 15-30 minutes.

The key thing you need is focus, determination and knowledge, they do not come instantaneously, they are skills which are developed every day- I learn something new every day, I learn how to focus more and more and I am always more determined to stick to my path even if I do go through a dry spell of getting no results.

Oh, I wouldn't say that! I don't believe in spells. But many people do; and many claim to have success. Ii seems to me that if you truly believe in spells, they will work about the same as prayers do. What I was suggesting is that spells do not really "back fire" in that particular way.I would have thought that a true "back fire" would not give your brother another illness, but that you would get pneumonia! I am not Wiccan, but perhaps Lark would help with the idea of spells "back firing".

First of all, if your brother has dysentery and pneumonia, he needs a clean source of water. Dysentery is something generally contracted from drinking from contaminated water supplies. Without a clean source of water he will continue to get sick, and perhaps get worse. IS he receiving help from a medical professional? That should be your first recourse (after clean water for you and your family).

As Bry suggests, most spells do not happen on their own. You often have to work along beside them to make them function. For this reason alone I rarely bother with anything involving "low magic," or that which is intended to help yourself or others gain materially. Self hypnotism and the like are useful in achieving your goals, but are often little more than psychology.

Given the nature of all of this, it seems - to me - to be just as fruitful to just try to work for what you wish to achieve.

Magic, for me, is about spirituality, understanding, and enlightenment.

It would be very rare for a patient with pneumonia to also contract dysentery. This sounds more like diarrhoea, not the very serious disease of dysentery. Medical attention needed; preferably in hospital.

Well, if you're serious about learning how to do magic and with starting from the rock-bottom then you don't start out by casting spells, you start out by learning how and why magic works.

You see, there is no such thing as an "easy" spell or a "beginner" spell. One either understands how magic works and has mastered the basics...in which case the magic will work..or you haven't done that sort of work..and no spell will work no matter how "easy" it seems.

Casting a successful spell involves much more than finding some spell on the internet or in a book, saying some words, lighting a candle, waving a wand of any of that sort of thing. In order for magic to work you need to understand how and why it works in the first place. Grounding and centering, visualization, focus and intent, energy manipulation, etc are all necessary first steps to even begin to have a chance at a spell actually working...and more importantly to prevent a spell from back-firing on you.

So, my advice for anyone who is truly serious is to start by reading a few books and practicing the exercises those books will give you. Once you have mastered the basics you won't need anyone to give you spells, you'll be able to create your own spells that will be far more effective than anything you find on the net. Here's the books I suggest:

"Before You Cast a Spell" by Carl McColman

"Spells and How They Work" by Janet and Stewart Farrar

"The Veil's Edge" by Willow Polson

"Modern Magick" by Donald Michael Kraig
