I'm trying to learn more about banishment and basic methods of protection against evil spirits/energy. But I'm unfortunately at a loss of where to start. I know that like much else it involves meditation and "energy working" with the end goal being to send a clear "go away" message that is inoffensive. I really try to be respectful of all spirits.
The simplest banishing and shielding I know are very similar. I will start with the shielding.
It is a basic exercise in energy manipulation and visualization. Basically, the practitioner envisions a sphere of light the color of protection completely surrounding themselves. They may choose to 'program' this shield to allow good energy to flow in and out, and negative energy only to exit, or just simply imagine it as an impenetrable barrier. Every time the person remembers this shield, it is renewed, as it is re-imagined as being in place.
The banishment is related to the former. In stead of imagining a shield bubble, the practitioner imagines a light pulse emanating from within, exploding outward. It pushes away every energy, or just unwanted, to clear the space. From there, the shield may be employed.
Some people may choose to use a simple banishing visualization on its own, or supplement it with elements of another regularly practiced banishing ritual which may be used at home, in a more elaborate manner. For example, someone may use some visualizations associated with the Lesser Pentagram ritual, or with the Greek line from the Star Ruby ritual, just for two easy examples.
When I've had a human spirit in my home that wasn't malevolent but still somewhat bothersome nonetheless. And I did not want to offend it I did a ritual focused on the idea of it 'passing on' instead of 'going away'. The tenants of my home all participated in the ritual and we were all very respectful in my opinion. It seemed to have worked because we never experienced any signs that the spirit was still with us after it was performed.
I don't actually banish any "negative energy" but to filter the already programmed information that is already in the energy. To do that I just visualize Hellraiser's puzzle box to trap all the unwanted energy inside and let the pure energy left out. This is one of many images I use. I even use smoky quartz and black tourmaline to turn negative energy into positive energy letting the stone do all the work for me. Another easy method is either a nice shower or just by standing underneath the sun's rays visualizing either white or gold energy purifying the mind body and soul.
I know with me, I do a lot of intent working when protecting my home. It's a lot like visualization, but instead I focus on what I intend on getting the spell or protection to do. I feel it go up, not just visualize it (the idea being blind people can't visualize, but they can intend things to form in their minds. Make sense?). Believe and it shall be done, as the saying goes :)

Conjure I understand just what you mean. When I've cast protection spells in the past I've focused on the field of a sheild of energy going up and protecting what I'm trying to keep safe. Feeling it+ visualising it
The most effective ways i learned about ridding yourself of any negative energies/spirits is by burning sage around your home, shielding yourself with a white light and carrying around a blessed item. My personal favorite is shielding myself in a protective bubble.
