I personally recommend it to people, along with most of his books. Cunningham is a decent author. Cunningham's books are his own version of Wicca, therefore his work should be understood from that point.

Scott Cunningham's books are not a bad place to start, but they were written quite a few years ago and there are much better books out there now to learn from. In particular, Scott's statement that "Wicca is anything you want it to be." is patently untrue and has caused no end of problems within the Wiccan community.

Instead of Scott Cunningham's books on "Wicca", I would suggest:

" Wicca: A Year and a Da y" by Timothy Roderick

" Wicca " by Thea Sabin

"T he Elements of Ritual " by Deborah Lipp

" The Heart of Wicca " by Ellen Cannon Reed

On the other hand, as it pertains to introductory books on herbalism and making oils and incenses, Scott Cunningham's books are really a good place to start.

I class Cunninghams craft as traditional witchcraft heavily influenced by Wiccan practices. I started reading Cunningham's books back in the day, personally I did not enjoy his book of Shadows, but his compendium-style books were helpful when I was first starting out.

Saying this, the books Lark has recommended are also brilliant and probably more suited. The thing with Cunningham is that he was so accessible and widely available back in the day that he was the go to author. Now we have many wonderful books easily bought from many different authors.
