Books?

I'm looking to buy some books on herbs. I want the books to cover both medical and magical uses. As well as things that are traditionally "herbs", such as trees, flowers and so on.

A friend recommended "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs", is this a good one to have? Are there others to add to it, or that are better?

For the magical part of your equation, yes. It is a very good book to have. I still refer to it, myself.

Now for the medicinal part, there are hundreds of good books, and hundreds of not-so-good books. You simply have to try one out, I can give you a place to start though:

The Green Pharmacy - James A. Duke

From there, if you type the book to a book store search engine or an online shopping source there will be many good recommendations - I recommend trying out a book before you buy it and see if you can find some books on medicinal herbal applications in a local store. Of course, it helps to work with what you got, and amazon is not a bad place to buy books.

I hope I have helped you in some way.

The book I use most often with healing is the 20,000 Secrets of Tea by Victoria Zak. As for magical uses, many can be figured out just by looking at what the herb is traditionally used for and it's properties. Their uses in healing almost always coincide with their magical uses. You will especially see that in the old herbals because that is the way they viewed illness back then. That is one reason I collect herbals. There are several Native American ones that are very nice to have. You can find them in the alternative medicine section of your local bookstore or online as well.
