According to Charles Baudelaire, a familiar spirit is the double, the alter ego-, of an individual. It does not look like the individual concerned. Even though it may have an independent life of its own, it remains closely linked to the individual. Familiar spirits usually take an anime form.

Mircea Eliade's method of meeting a familiar is going into a state of receptivity, in sleep or trance. I'd imagine that would help you learn if he is really your familiar spirit. Hope I could be of help!

If you're talking about animal familiars, they were simple spirits said to in older times come upon a worker of magick, aiding them in their craft my doing something like lending the small amount of energy they have. They would often come back to the same people over and over again, but not always. So having a connection to a pet is not necessarily the same thing, though it is very common misconception. Blessed be. :)

A familiar animal is not a physical animal. They are spirits and have hardly ever been seen excepted from small glimpses. The chances.of you running across an animal familiar is not common.

Tradition also states that familiars are received at initiation into a coven from a Magister or granted upon the witch by spiritual entities (Faust is a good example of the use of a pact in order to get familiars)

Another way I've found quite interesting, is while in a section of the astral (inner) plane by the use of a symbol (a tattva or a tarot card for more experienced practitioners) is meeting a certain individual and requesting it's help, also it's sigil and name, so it can be called upon need.

Another technique, powerful, but disastrous if it goes wrong, is creating an artificial elemental being, also called servitor by chaos magicians, or artificial familiars. You picture it's shape, charge it with force by appropiate invocations and give it a task to fullfil. Now, always, after the task is done, or if it fails after a period of time, destroy, banish, etc the being...if you don't, then it will become contaminated and wreck havoc in you life...also, it will be harder to banish.....

You're welcome. :) And it's true that cats are extremely spiritually powerful animals. My cat often appears in mind and my sister's dreams, sometimes in the form at a human, and I've easily pulled her into my inner sanctum when I was feeling lonely before. When I look at her it seems like she's communicating. As I believe in past lives I believe that she could have been something like an animal familiar or if maybe she was just an intuitive and spiritual person. We never really know but it's fun to try and think about it
