Chaotes are a style of magick originating from Peter Carroll that believe that there is no order, everything is chaos. There is a very complicated theory involved in the entire thing, but the bare bones of it is that they can do anything to create magick if they believe it will create magick. It's all in your mind. It's all about making yourself believe whatever you are doing. They go so far as creating their own deities and even their own belief systems, or using various mythologies and beliefs at their own discretion. But the catch is they "believe" in it just to perform the spell/ritual and then casting it away until they want or need it again. Some don't go that far and only create their own spellwork however they want to. I knew a chaote that casted while he played electric guitar. They're very shamanic in many ways but also usually highly skeptical. The joke about chaotes is, if it doesn't make sense, its probably perfect chaos magick. I find it fascinating because I have always been enthralled by the power of chaos, but it's not for me. If you play around with it, do not advance too quickly. Although the smart chaotes are quite successful in their practice, the dumb ones end up becoming extremely neurotic and their behavior changes dramatically. Chaos is not a power to play with. It will mess you up if your not careful. It is not for the weak minded.

It has been claimed that Chaos magic came to be in a meeting between Peter Carroll and Ray Sherwin in 1976. The whole theory about it is that belief itselfis a major active magical force andemphasizes the flexibility of belief and the ability to consciously choose one's beliefs. It encourages pretty much any practice, especially sigil magic and anything having to do with the scientific world. Very much encouraging the practitioner to explore and have fun in their craft. Not stemming from any older beliefs or magical systems, but exploring many.
