Crystal Balls?

I wasn't sure if this would have fit in misc. or fortune telling. So sorry if this is in the wrong place. Are crystal balls just things "scam gypsies" use, or do they have an actual purpose, be it for divination or spells.

The usual view on crystal balls is completely fake, they are usually made of glass and are usually for decoration.

But crystal balls, such as scrying balls are a very useful, useable item, I know several people who use obsidian ones quite frequently.

I have used my crystal ball quite successfully in divination.

They can certainly be used to scam people by fraudulent mediums. But they can also be used in quite a reliable way for divination as well.

The link is to an excelent short work by Charles Stansfeld Jones, or 'Frater Achad' and takes one through the basic theory of scrying with a crystal ball, the purification and consecration of the crystal, and ultimately develops the practice of crystal gazing.

I wonder how much the medium matters in comparison to the effort, will and natural talent of the diviner. I mean to say is it the tea leaves, bones, Crystal ball or the individual divining meaning. If i were so talented might i be able to glean information from a candle flame or the pattern of a broken bottle on the street? Or is there inherent power in certain objects? This is an interesting question for me.
