An Opinion About Labeling
By:
Post # 1

Often when I go about in the forums I see questions like "can someone give me white magick spells" or "what black magick spells are there" and those questions are followed by answers such as "there is no color in magick" or "magick is just intent".

My opinion is this: I, and everyone else who wishes to, should be allowed to label themselves without being shot down by such answers. I believe there is no harm in calling oneself a "White Magick Witch" or a "Black Magick Witch" or any other color they wish to call themselves as. We all know that before, Black Magick was labeled as the 'bad' magick, White Magick as the 'good' and we all know that is not the case as of now. To me, there is no good or bad magick, but to some, there probably is a good or bad magick. What I am trying to say is, just let them be. If they choose to believe that there is a good and bad magick, then let them believe that because it is part of their beliefs.

Now, back to labeling in general. We can call ourselves many things: wizard, mage, practitioner, witch, etc, so I do not see what is wrong with adding color to the mix. We must allow others to see magick how they wish to see magick, and not how we want them to.

This is just a small opinion, and you may agree or disagree with it.

No one is shooting at anyone. Its called correcting, so they get the correct info about magick. That's it...

Even though I feel it is the intent which makes it good or bad and not the magic itself, I am not insulting anyone by sharing my opinion. I feel that everyone has the right to share theirs as long as they can act civily. If someone chooses to use labels then that is fine for them. I think a lot of people need to learn the difference between debate and argument, myself included at times. It is hard after all to know the emotion behind what someone is writing unless they state it outright.

I understand a few of the labels, or just why people would apply labels. Example: Healing would generally be White, and Curses (given that they are generally used to hurt someone) are considered black magic. Working with herbs can be called Green magic. But I, myself, really just call it magic. I don't really feel a need to add a color to it, but I'm not going to dismiss someone who does. I'm perfectly fine with it.

What I'm not okay with, is people telling people what to do and what not to do in their practice associated with these labels. Like people telling others not to curse just because it's harmful or "black" magic. Because honestly, who's business is it about what you do in your path?

Other than that, I like what you've stated.

i don't see the harm in people labeling, but i think the intent of the spell and the emotion when doing the spell is what should make it white or black magic

See, I do not see people that say magic/k does not have any color as shooting some one down. Here is why;

Black, white, blue, green, and all other colors in front of magic/k are subjective terms that mean whatever the individual deems it to be. It is not shooting anyone down saying that energy does not have color. It is not wrong to say that each color is purely subjective.

Peace

I don't see the harm in someone using labels nor do I see the harm in someone explaining their opinion as to why labeling oneself or magick might not make sense as it is an attempt to help someone. There are spells that can be considered purely good but all actions you take be they mundane or magickal can have unintended consequences which can make labeling one's life difficult. In the end even when one tries to be "white" they can do something wrong and as such a person's..."color" or character is always changing and shaped by life events. To get back to my first statement I don't consider anything wrong with labeling oneself as that is their right yet it is also the right of others to share their opinion regarding such labeling especially if it's meant as constructive criticism with no harm intended.
