Kundalini and the third eye are separate. Kundalini can lead to the "opening" of the third eye. Kundalini is the vril power located at the base of the spine, it goes up through the spine and shoots endorphines and energy to the brain and can awaken the third eye. It basically the energy leading to the awakening to higher consciousness (often referred to as the coiled serpent that goes up the spine). The thing with the kundalini awakening is you have to have somewhat of higher consciousness for it work properly, if you awaken it with a lower (primal) consciousness or ego, it will cause a clash with your system because the two don't mix, and you could get sick or feel burning pain or something of the like.
In alchemy it's often depicted as combining the sun and moon, the left and right sides of the mind, the conscious and the subconscious, the material and the immaterial

Ys, third eye is just one of the seven chakras. According to traditions Kundalini is an ancient snake that is isnide you. Actually Kundalini has proven scientifically... It exists. Kundalini is form of energy and a powerful one. As linggod said, Kundalini can lead to awakening of the third eye. Like all the other chakras.

It is said though it must be practised very carefully... I wouldn't say opening third eye is better than working with Kundalini. It depends on how you see it. But why not working with Kundalini since it will develop your other chakras too...? No matter the risks...

It has been a while since my last conversation involving the Kundalini. The Kundalini is a different energy than the Ajna, it resides in the base of your spine and is commonly reffered to as the "dormant snake".
Awakening the Kundalini should be taken with care and seriousness. It can awaken rather suddenly, which can be very uncomfortable, or it can happen in a controlled ascent to your Sahasrara.
There was a scientist (I have forgotten his name) who claimed that the Kundalini was the DNA and that Awakening of the Kundalini was actually the activation of our full DNA. Whether if it is DNA or not, it's very important for ones ascension to the higher planes.

The Ajna, or Third eye, is not energy per se but a meridian/centre/channel/collective of energy or prana in some Hindu traditions.

The kundalini is a psychospiritual energy which does reside at the base of the spine. It is, as Guru said, to be taken seriously and not flippantly like most modern day (nonsense spouting) witches and new-agers say. The best account I can think of is "Serpent Fire" by Gopi Krishna.

Kundalini can be awakened with the help of a guru, or it can be awakened on it's own. It is not to be rushed, but gently teased and allowed to run it's course naturally, certain yogic practices and magical practices can aid in this. There is no denying it, if you have doubts whether you have experienced it, you have not experienced it. When you do, you will have no doubt of the energy potential within you.

I liken normal bodily energy which is around us and in the sphere of sensation to prana, I liken kundalini to concentrated prana, located in the root chakra/muladhara. It is volatile and can be self destructive if the vessel is not prepared.
