Is it best to....

Is it best to work with spirits who come to you to help you, or is it better to work with spirits you've called to you?

The reason why I ask this is because a while ago the spirit I work with(he came to me to help me) told me not to work with spirits that you summon unless you know for a fact that you can trust them.

Normally people that work with evocation call spirits they've already studied up on and can establish some sort of relationship with. It takes time and dedication to successfully call something you know, and not invite random entities into your space. If you're being told by some entity to not contact anything else, a cause for concern seems to be brought up, especially since you claim it came to you, and not the other way around.

It's more of him(the spirit I work with) saying not to contact random entities rather than not having contact with anything else. He said if it was an entity you know about or you can trust it's fine, but if it's a random spirit or entity that you're calling he said it is wise not to call upon entities that you don't know.

In that case I suppose it's ok. It's general knowledge not to contact things you know nothing about.

Depends on the spirit. There are bothersome spirits that just show up. There are spirits that you summon and just become a bother. There are spirits that seem to show up but have been with you for several lifetimes and are just waiting for you to remember them. There are spirits that you summon and can develop a good working relationship with.
