I was wondering if anyone could advise me on how to become a student, or perhaps studying under someone who can teach me the basics of magic.

Instead of getting a teacher try looking in the articles and use the resources given to you but if you get stuck on the way I am sure there are many people who will be willing to help you.

There is definitely a great bit of helpful articles and forum threads to get you started. I don't consider myself teacher worthy just yet, but if you have any questions or find you still need help, I'll be glad to assist in anyway I can.

Start out by reading the basics (there is a beginners section here) and exploring the different paths there out there, then take it from there.
The best teacher you will find in most cases is yourself.
