How do I find my familiar

Hi everyone! I'm new to SoM but have been casting spells for years. I have a few powers I was born with, my family on my mothers side is descendent from the Druids, so a lot of us have powers. However I have yet to gain a familiar an am wondering if one is necessary and if not, what benefits does attaining one have? How do I go about finding one?

I was always told not to go looking for one but to let it come to you

How will I know once it comes? And what actual use is having a familiar?

When it comes you'll just know I can't explain it but you'll just know some how .

Ok so how does having one help me once I find it? What purpose does it serve?

Well I've heard that they help you with your spells and rituals and are there to mainly help you with your magick and I think just with anything you need

Well, let me tell you how mine found me, an introduction, if you will. One day I was doing reading on guides, animals in particular. The thoughts were with me all through the evening, and after going to bed. It was on my mind the whole time I was falling asleep. Then it happened. I was dreaming of brown bear and me in a river playing. He was pulling me along as I held on to his fur. I will never forget that feeling of course wet fur between my fingers as I held on. He was a powerful beast, and I felt very protected and happy.I woke up and smiled all that day, as I had met my spirit guide. It was all quite exiting.
So my spirit guide came in dream. If you do the same thing, it might happen to you, too. Have the thought of meeting your animal guide, or spirit guide guides are not always animals) as you fall asleep. I mean have it as the very last thought. Now this may not work for you. But I pass it on because it worked for me. I've heard others say to meditate. I think deep trance is more of where you might find it. But dreams seems easy. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first night. Just keep thinking, and have it be last as you fall asleep. Good luck!

I have had 3 different familiars and with each one I knew right away. They always know/knew what I was thinking as I did with them. They will help me when I am casting or doing other work such as bring me something I forgot.
I have always been able to know exactly what they are thinking/wanting or needing as they have with me. Some say that is "Just having a bond" with them but it's not. It's kind of hard to explain
