Rain spell

Hey everyone, im still fairly new to paganism and specifically wicca. But, yesterday i performed my first spell. It was a rain spell called "make it rain" here on this site. It wasnt totally successful. Many clouds gathered and i could smell rain in the air, but no precipitation happened. I feel this happened because i didnt prepare correctly. I didnt pray to my god and goddess and didnt use circles or any other tools and didnt have the best energy quality. Never the less, it was a great start and am happy with the learning experience. Id certainly recommend this spell to someone with more experience looking for a nice bit of rain!
