trances

i've heard that eskimos sometimes draw large circles around smaller circles in rock to induce a trance. does this really work, or is it some kind of psychological reaction? if it does work, can it be done on paper?

I didn't know that. That's interesting. I sometimes draw a clockwise spiral starting from the outside and working my way in as I chant, sing or hum. I don't stop drawing until I'm done with my spell. The paper ends up looking like a big black blob because once I make my way into the center, I continue circling very small in the center until I'm finished with my work. I don't need it to enter a trance but I do use it when I feel like it. I never read it anywhere, it was something I began doing naturally. I'm an artist so using drawing just felt right. To enter a trance some people visualize falling or climbing downward and I think the circling, repetitive motion facilitates this in a physical way. I've also done it with sticks on the ground and my favorite is a cinnamon stick I carved with a knife into a pencil shape (pointed bottom). I focus on the center as as I draw. It makes a light brown color on the paper or nothing at all. But I like the energy of cinnamon and like the naturalness of it rather than a man made pen/ink.

Trance work can be very help like white said some people visualize going down a ladder. I use that method along with trying to create a falling sension to enter a trance easier. Just a heads up always have some sort of protection while trancing also make sure not to be startled out of one. Nice quiet spaces are the key.
