Spirit Guides: False?

Hello and Blessed Be...

Before I begin, please know to any readers that I hold the most full and utmost respect towards all Paths of Faith. But today during a lesson in my Biology class, something my teacher stated made me stop and reflect on parts of my own new faith.

So...today my teacher discussed the more specific ways on how illegal drugs kill certain cells. As she was discussing, she noted that the early Native Americans were rumored to have taken hallocinogenic drugs before going on with their "vision walks". I immediately paused--from my knowledge I knew she actually meant the rituals and religious views of Shamans. My heart holds full admiration for this path: I hold nothing against it at all. But, she continued and said that the ancients would meet their "Spirit Guides" under the influence of substances illegal to us today.

My question is...are Spirit Guides real..or truly just an illusion? I find it very strange that my Power Animal is the Owl and it has made physical appearances to me while I needed protection and while I was in distress.

I am just as baffled and confused as you. Please help me clarify this.

I apologize for any inconviences.

Drugs simply "enhance" the state of mind required to experience spiritual phenomena. For some it is like a quicker way to enter a more "halfway" state, however using meditation etc. can allow one to experience the same state.

In addition, scientists have studied those who meditate and experience spiritual phenomena which has given evidence to show that no damage to the human brain occurs as described in drugs cases.

In conclusion, whether you take drugs or not and experience spiritual phenomena, you are experiencing the same state only with a few differences. Don't bother with drugs, just be patient (learning is half the battle lol)

Hallucinogens are only damaging to the body if they are abused. A Native American would use peyote at important turning points in his/her life. It was not something used everyday or in mass quantities. Clinical studies of drugs only look at daily use of drugs. They don't get spirituality, or respect for a particular drug.

as an example; I smoke tobacco, i abuse it because i'm addicted. Native Americans also used tobacco, but it too was a spiritual tool, not a drug to be used all the time. It served as an offering to the spirit world, again only used in certain situations. If i were to go back in time to say 1643, the Native Americans would be offended at the way i use tobacco

In northern shamanism and practices that implement the fetch (our version of spirit guides and animals) there is a path involving the use of drugs and herbs to achieved a desired state of altered consciousness- the influence of said drugs simply helping the person to achieve that state faster. And the desired result of that state would be to path walk and journey or work with our fetch.

However, that is not the only way it can be done. It's just one path. There's a variety of other things. We like to call it the "eightfold path to altered states of consciousness" (in Northern shamanism). There's meditation, breathing techniques, fasting, dancing and movement, etc that can be used to achieve the states where we work with our fetch.

Most academic fields will slander all magickal ways. Yes, some used/use drugs to induce visions in all paths but it is not necessary and is not used all of the time. I have never taken drugs or fasted and I am constantly in communication with spirits and guides. I journey with no aid. I wouldn't suggest correcting your teacher, but instead just smile and realize she is ignorant.

Fasting is another way that many have "seen" things, look at the story of Jesus in the desert. But Christians would never suggest Jesus didn't have a devil tempting him. The story of Moses on the mountain (that particular mountain had fumes that were hallucinogenic)--without that experience, there would be no commandments. It's everywhere, not just Native Americans but most Americans pick on the Native Americans. I once had a history teacher who called indians "savages". It's unfortunate.

To be honest, no one knows. Sure people will tell of their personal experiences, but it could be their mind playing tricks on them. It's up to you to experiment for yourself.
