You can take breaks from it and there is a reason behind it that I can think of which is actually quite obvious. If we become too grounded in the spiritual, we forget about the physical. The physical is just as important as the spiritual as we tend to forget in this path we all collectively walk. But the idea of winding down from the spiritual and magickal is needed because if we didn't have a wind down we'd forget all about this level of existence.

There is another reason I can also think of, and that is simply that when we get involved with feeling the energies around us we start to feel both the positive and negative around us all the time. The positive will not effect us as much as the negative does because negative drags us down more emotionally. The people around you may seem happy on the outside, but on the inside they can be suffering terribly and you'll never know. In that way you can pick up easier on those around you and their negative emotions and feelings.

The second bit is based on the idea that when you know what is going on you notice things more than you would normally. >.O

Yes i agree. But the practitioner should integrate the physical and the spiritual together because there is no real difference. They are both reality we just perceive a difference.

Every day I sit at my altar and meditate for 20 minutes or so. Then I will offer up my "day" to the Gods. I very rarely cast a spell, and even then mainly for healing; for that I would cast a circle. I think any more than, perhaps, an hour a day spent working magic is too long. You can become "addicted" to it; then you are no longer controlling magic; it is controlling you!

In my experience and the experiences of my group, feeling the need to take a break from magic is due to access energy expenditure. Many people use their energy but do not replenish it. Therefore, just like being in an extremely stressful situation, you will feel drained, tired and depressed. If you are feeling like your workings are taking too much out of yourself, you might want to try harnessing the energy which floats around in the universe (which we call kee). A word of caution, make sure you are not harnessing someone elses energy accidentally rather than pulling from the kee energy. No one likes an energy vampire.
