Wands - feathers
By:
While walking through s forest today, I picked up a feather which I now know is an eastern screech owl's feather. I've been looking for feathers for my wand for a while (not this kind) but I've finally found one and... I don't know how or where to put it on. I have a string of black leather that I'm going to use to attach it. However... I don't know if it should dangle off, and I don't know which end to attach it to. Please help?

I would suggest laying the wand and feather out on a cloth or table that will give some contrast to the colors, then play with the positioning to find what looks good. i would also look into the symbolism and relationships of owl, as it might be more apt of an addition than you think. I would recommend looking up owl totem for some insight.

Just as a quick synopsis, owl tends to be deeply connected with Wisdom, knowledge, penetrating sight, intuition, and awareness. Also hunting, silence, flight, and in some cases or cultures an omen of death. (Death being its own complex symbol when you really dig into it.)

So there are lots of connections with the positive aspects of magic one might want to incorporate into an expression of will like the wand. Strength, focus, intuition, knowledge, and so-on.

My own wand has some feathers that I have hanging loose. I figured out where i wanted to hold the wand and made a small (one or two inch wide) wrapping at the head of where my hand would rest. From there I left a two inch long tag of the leather which I then tied the feather to by the quill so it would hang from under the wand and over my fingers.

If you want, snag a look at my profile pictures. I'll snap a pic and upload it. Heh I have a paltry little collection of zero pictures I have been meaning to add to anyways. ^_^

Typically, feathers would be attached to the tip of the wand. But really in magic, there is nothing 'typical'. Play around with it and find what feells right to you.
