Before asking for or attempting spells you need to learn basic information that you can build on and use in spell casting.
Meditation and breathing techniques are not the only things you should be learning, there are many other techniques that many believe should come before spells, such as:
- Visualization
- Centering
- Grounding
- Energy Manipulation
Once you have studied and can do most basic techniques you can learn how to write your own spell and be able to successfully cast them.

I have already listed some good starting topics, these practices are commonly used later on when you begin casting spells.
You shouldn't even be considering casting till you have studied and learned enough "basic" techniques to be able to successfully cast.
There are a lot of great forum posts made by long time practitioners in the general forum section that are great to look at, but books should also be considered as they contain a lot more information.
Learn your corrospondences; herbs, moon phases, colors, herbs, candles, incense, essential oils, days of the week, numbers, etc. By learning these you can incorperate them into your own spells!
Learn the generic basics. These are thought to be grounding, centering, and meditation. I would add in visulization as well. These can be very useful for getting into the right state of mind for spellwork, calming and quieting your mind so that you may focus on the task at hand, etc.

Spells don't just "work". You must have studied what magic really is and how it works and have mastered the basic necessary skills in order for a spell to work. I've written a long post on this that also contains subthreads on various aspects of spellcasting. You can read it at http://www.spellsofmagic.com/read_post.html?post=829286
