This is an absurd post. People who could not take care of kittens used to drown them in the olden days.....those cats did not have nine lives. Ergo, your theory has no evidence and can be dismissed.

Cats have highly developed inner ears which give them exceptional balance, allowing them to adjust their fall to land on all 4 paws. Along with their exceptional reflex's they appear to avoid dissaterous situations... therefore it seems as though they have 9 lives.
That's my theory anyway :)

I suppose it stems from cats always landing on their feet and their agility and such allowing them to escape from life threatening situations.

I know that in some tellings that it's seven lives and not 9.

It's isn't good or right to only believe something. You should know where that belief comes from. Especially when it has to do with physical consequences. (Like drowning kittens. You don't have to drown them 9 times to make sure they're dead.)

For example, I can believe that quicksilver is the elixir of life and make a thread and say. "This is only for alchemists who believe that quicksilver is the real actual elixir of life. You don't have to believe it too, but don't post if you have any concern for our health and safety." No. They should post that they disagree, because quicksilver is a deadly poison. That is not a matter of belief or opinion. It's a fact that quicksilver is not the elixir of life. It's a fact that cats die when they're injured or ill, just like we do.

Cats are impressively agile, and magicians throughout history have loved prime numbers like 7 and 3. And 9 is three 3's. So, it was just a way to express how impressed we are with cats' agility. That's where I believe this belief comes from, too.

The legend started on the fairy tale of the cat-shee also known a catsidhe there are two types of catsidhe one is a fairy cat the one witch the legend originated from was the one about the witch sidhe she could shapeshift into a cat. She was warned that a ninth time she would be a cat forever, she was told not to. So naturally she did it. She was then stuck as a cat for the rest of her life. The none lives comes from that story. That's why cats have nine lives.
