Just in case you dont understand waterstyle, underground gas is a natural and common phenomenon. That is why miners used to take canarys down as a primitive gas detection device.

And noting that this so-called Gate To Hell is located in a volcanic area the two most likely killer gasses would be sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide, both of which are commonly vented from volcanic areas and which are both deadly. Nothing supernatural about this, just natural forces at work.
