Potential side effects of peppermint essential oil are as follows:

1.Slowing down the heart rate in some people ,especially those with hearth disease.

2.Since peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is a hybrid of spearmint (Mentha spicata ) and watermint (Mentha aquatica) it does contain menthol.People who are allergic to menthol should avoid all three of them.

3.Peppermint essential oil can cause skin irritation if applied directly on the skin, without mixing it with carrier oils. This is especially valid for people with sensitive type of skin. You can get very serious rash ,if you do not test the mixture of the essential oil plus the carrier oil on small not so visible spot on your body (like the back of your wrist).

4.The essential oil should not be consumed orally or injected internally!

5.Peppermint oils should be avoided if you are pregnant or nursing. It might cause miscarriage in worst case(shedding the lining of the uterus). Not much is known about the effect of all essential oils on the fetus and on the mother ,so in case of doubt better avoid than cry at the end.Peppermint tea can cause heartburn in pregnant woman if it is taken on daily basis ,better avoid.Even if you drink the tea make sure you do not drink it very often and in big doses! In case of doubt consult your physician do not trust everything posted online some books are not reliable sources of information either.

6.Babies and small kids should not be given peppermint tea or get in contact with much more potent chemically wise oil.

7.You should be cautious using both tea and oil in case you have stomach ulcers.

Laid public is reminded that essential oils can penetrate very fast through the skin and even get to the blood stream via inhalation too.Ask your doctor if it is safe to use certain essential oils if you have illness or you are pregnant and nursing. All essential oils should be kept safely and away from children.

Your health and the health and safety of your child should be your first priority the curiosity of trying new things should come second.
