An altar is any structure upon which sacrifices or other offerings are made for religious purposes. Really you can have anything you want on your alter as long as it has meaning to you.

You do not need to have an alter but many witches like to have at least one. I personally have 2 and can set up another one out side in no time. I just don't leave one out in the yard all the time becasue of my children. If you want some ideas of what to place on your alter visit the site below.

My alter is actually an end table that is older than me. Lol. I got from my mom, who got it from her mom. I painted the whole thing and painted the top to be a talking board. (Whatever you wish to call them).
My wand is also home made.
(Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't call my practice Wicca. I'm not honestly sure what it is. Just a disclaimer to waive scrutiny. ;-) )

An altar is not an essential thing to have. It depends on how you feel as there is no right or wrong answer to this.

I have one but rarely use it in spells. I find that it just gets in the way in the circle. It doesn't have to have expensive or bought things on it either. A cangle to represent fire, a stick of incense for Air, a bit of sand/salt/dirt/or a crystal for earth and water in a container for water. These are the basic things.

Next you could add a God or Goddess statue, wand, athame, crystals, stones, tarot cads, runes etc.

It is up to you on what you want.

I agree. During the Harvest Moon I was researching different altars and found that there is no one true way to make an altar. Altar building is personal. I was just tired of my basic, boring altar and wanted to personalize and dress it up differently. I added aztec gods and other cultural artifacts along with other things that have meaning or are powerful to me. Hope that helps.

There is also a portable alter. That is one you can put up when not in use, so that way family, friends or even children can get into.

Portable alters i feel are better. But that is my opinion.
I am also in the process of making in alter its just taking a while.

Seeing I am in the "Broom Closet" still, I use a Portable Alter all the time. It is easier and I think I will always work this way. I can always find many candles and Lighters and stuff.

My Alter:

  • Box
  • Small Alter Cloth
  • Small White Candle (Emea)
  • Small Yellow Candle (Abba)
  • Small Red Candle (Yeshua)
  • Rock (Earth)
  • Wand (Air)
  • Small Cup with Holy Water (Water)
  • Powdered Incense
  • Angel Statue (Spirit)
  • Bowl you can burn stuff in
  • Any Other Candles needed
  • Normal Playing Cards (For Tarot)
