Hello, I am very new to Wicca and have absolutely no idea how to even start practicing the craft. Does anybody have any tips that may help?

Before you dive in head first, I just want to make sure you know the different between Wiccan and witchcraft. Wicca is a religion, witchcraft is "the craft."

Check out the forums, they are really helpful. If you go the general info and look that the pinned posts, you will find a lot that will help you out. Also, there are some really awesome articles.

I wish you well and hope you find what you are looking for.

In forums find the General Info section. Read Starting Out and Basics Expanded. They have info for a beginner, and for those who need reminding. Read, learn, study, practice, repeat as often as necessary. Welcome to Spells of Magic!

For information about Wicca to start you off, I'd suggest you start out with the Wicca Forum here on SOM. In particular look at:

What Wicca Is and Isn't: http://www.spellsofmagic.com/read_post.html?post=637268

And also read through the multiple articles in the

Wicca Basics: http://www.spellsofmagic.com/read_post.html?post=580909

I've been a practicing Wiccan for 30 years. While I don't teach on-line I am more than willing to answer specific questions or to point you at good resources. Ask me anytime.

don't run out and buy all the shiny new toys. read the pinned threads in this section, and buy a book or two [not 50] on the subject. study, then practice. i would also recommend for your year and a day to meditate and journal your thoughts and feelings to try and figure out if this is the right path for you. ask yourself questions like why you want to be Wiccan [and try to answer with more than a one word answer. i'm guilty of doing that]

I just started myself. I bought a book, and an altar. Going to take baby steps when it comes to spells, but I know the Wiccan religion is in my soul.

Oh,Vicki, here we go again about spells! Gardner, who started Wicca, wasn't too much bothered about spells. I know many Wiccans, two or three even originals who actually knew Gardner; and they don't bother with spells. Many Wiccans never cast spells. So, concentrate on learning about the religion and beliefs of Wicca, and leave the spells for very much later.

to be Wiccan [even a witch] does not mean spell casting. yes it sounds cool, and when i started out i remember wanting to learn all i could on spell casting, from from Samhain [october 31] until now, i can tell you [excluding circle casting] i have cast two spells [cleansing and protection on Imbolc] because i only cast when i've hit a wall and need the extra help. many people use spells as a crutch or bandage when they are more of a safety net. [plus Wicca isn't about spell casting]

since you're both starting, two things. one, make two lists [or write a letter] one of the reasons why you wish to become a Wiccan and two define the Rede [as in harm none do as ye wilt] from your viewpoint [what is morally acceptable to you, what is harmful, what you should do and should never do] when you are satisfied, put these lists away. 4 months later, pull them out, review them, and revise them as you see fit, then put them away again. repeat this every 4 months until your year and a day is up. by this point you should know what you stand for and have a 'code of conduct' if you will you can present to the Lord and Lady when you dedicate yourself.

the second thing i would like you to do is to read and reflect on Scott Cunninghams 13 Goals of a Witch. he said you can add/remove the list as you see fit, but over his years of study, this was a list of things most witches live by with one or two exceptions.

1. Know yourself
2. Know your Craft
3. Learn
4. Apply knowledge with wisdom
5. Achieve balance
6. Keep your words in good order
7. Keep your thoughts in good order
8. Celebrate life
9. Attune with the cycles of the Earth
10. Breathe and eat correctly
11. Exercise the body
12. Meditate
13. Honour the Goddess and God

Dear Nikoshima,

You said something about dedicating myself to the Lord and Lady,
I realize that I probably sound really stupid and ignorant right now, but what do you mean by dedicate myself?
