Dieties
By:
Are there any specific deities to work with as a beginner. I have been reading and partially practicing Wicca for many many years. The older I have gotten, I have realized that I have left out so many important aspects of the path. I have never worked with a diety before and I am eager to start. I have read that using one particular diety for an extended amount of time will help you learn more about her and her aspects. Is this true? If so, any recommendations for my first diety? I am far from an expert in Wicca. Everything I know, I have taught myself through books and now the internet. Please help. Many Blessings.

It all depends on what you refer to as Wicca. Those who consider themselves pagans might ask for help from dieties from a certain pantheon of gods related to a certain religious path such as the Greek gods or the Egyptian gods, while Wicca is itself a religion so it has it's on gods such as the triple goddess. Do you know anything about any diety? Most choose a diety they feel drawn to as asking the aid of such a being implies belief in them. There are those who practice magick who never ask the aid of a divine being so it isn't required but it is obviously something you desire.

I have read about dieties. Since I didnt really ever feel a need for one nor really understood their position in practicing, I never expanded my knowledge. Since I am older and more welcoming of a new experience....something pulled me to the dieties.Without going deeper into learning anything about them, cant feel much of a connectiin. Maybe I should do that first before deciding to work with just any one diety. Thanks. Blessings

Dieties are great when you need assistance in a magical working or in problem solving. I think there is no right or wrong way of choosing. It is all about using your intuition and the characteristics of that diety. Choosing a pantheon to work with will require study and dedication. It is important to research the deities, their myths, and the culture in which they originally developed. Eventually you may become drawn to specific deities (which is sometimes refered to as your Personal Deitiy). Yeah, I think you can learn from them because they can teach you in many different ways (including in your dreams, showing omens, whispering words, etc).

I don't consider myself an expert with dieties. But, I do know from my experience, they have always helped provide additional knowledge when needed and given that extra kick when I seem to be at a lost.

Read the mythology and you'll feel drawn to one naturally. Then read and learn everything you can about him/her. After that you can build an altar for them or incorporate them into your pre-existing altar. If you choose Greek, I recommend the website theoi.com

thank you everyone for wonderful guidance. After my post, I looked a bit and seen that I am apparently more drawn to the Roman Gods/Goddesses. For whatever reason, I continued to look more into their history than any other. Is that the pantheon everyone is referring to? Greek/Roman/Norse....etc... If so, I think I am on the right track.

Deities can change many times, the one you worship first may stay in your practice life long some can come and go, I would say go with what feels right in your heart.

You might enjoy reading " Devoted to You " by Judy Harrow which discusses what it's like to work with a Patron Deity, how people have found those Deities to which they dedicate themselves, and ways to honor those Deities.

My personal experience has been that Deities largely choose who they wish to work with rather than the other way around. And that certainly was the circumstance when I was chosen in no uncertain terms by Sekhmet. Let it be known to the Deities that you wish to be partnered with or more of them and then be aware when they come knocking.

thank you Lark. That makes the most sense. I was just messaging someone regarding the deities and said how I cant find any that are calling out to me. None that I am relating myself to. I am probably not spiritually ready for them just yet even though my thirst for knowledge of them and how to accept them is overwhelming.

I must confess to some curiousity here. You said that you had been practicing Wicca for many years but never worked with a deity. Since Wicca is a religion, does that mean that you weren't working the the Horned God and Triple Goddess in some form while celebrating the Esbats and Sabbats? Or do you just mean that you hadn't yet had the opportunity to work with a Patron God or Goddess?
