Vodou vs Voodoo vs Hoodoo

Hello all!

I'm not at all familiar with Vodou, Voodoo, or Hoodoo, and I was wondering what the difference between the three are, and what some defining characteristics of each are.

(explain it to me like you would a second grader, I really know nothing about these topics, in fact I've never even heard of Vodou until today)

Okay. Vodou and Voodoo

Vodou originated in Haiti, and is a religion. It was Americanized, which is now Voodoo, and sometimes called New Orleans Voodoo.

Hoodoo is a practice. A form of folk magick. It came to the USA during the slave trade. Therefore, it mingled with Native American herbalism and other cultures as well.

I would have to disagree with Hexen_Furer.

Voodoo and Vodou~

Voodoo is an indigenous organized religion of coastal West Africa from Ghana to Nigeria. And Vodun is practiced by the Ewe people of eastern and southern Ghana, and southern and central Togo, the Kabye people, Mina people and Fon people of southern and central Togo, southern and central Benin and (under a different name) the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria.

Vodou is a syncretic religion practiced chiefly in Haiti and the Haitian diaspora.Vodou originated in the French slave colony of Saint-Domingue in the 18th century, when African religious practice was actively suppressed, and enslaved Africans were forced to convert to Christianity

Hoodoo~

Hoodoo, also known as conjure, and "Voodoo" (which strictly speaking is different in many ways) is a traditional African-American folk spirituality that developed from a number of West African, Native American, and European spiritual traditions.Hoodoo has some spiritual principles and practices similar to spiritual folkways in Haitian, Cuban, Jamaican, and New Orleans traditions.

"In Hoodooism, anything that you do is the plan of God, God has something to do with everything that you do whether it's good or bad, he's got something to do with it... You'll get what's coming to you."
