What's the technical term
By:
Over the years, before I started practicing myself. I learnt from my grandparents, uncle and older brother. They told me, that those who practise magic do so in circles, these were witches (which they described as a unisex term) but I have never formed the circle. I have always used magic alone, I have never had to draw on elements to get results. I started to learn that I had my own power before I used magic, and I have always relied on that. But my friend who like me comes from a spiritualist background, can drain the energy from living things, never enough to do harm but enough that upon his attempt to demonstrate this to me I could feel the effect. He has asked me this, and I have told him that the ability is somewhat vampiric (although his body did not absorb this energy) but now I wonder, what is the technical term for him, and what is the term for one on my path.

He is a psychic vampire or psi vamp and you are a solitary witch.

Thank you, I've heard both terms before, although I wasn't sure if they applied to us, incase we were just overly developed psychics, one of which simply followed the path of the wise, while the other follows that of a medium.

You do not need to be a psychic vampire to draw energy from anything. I draw energy from and/or connect to sources everytime I practise magick, be it from the moon, sun, ground, water, flame, etc. It doesn't make me a psi vampire, it is merely a way to build up extra energy or specific energy for a purpose. Anyone can do it. We are interconnected to everything, so why limit oneself? I would never take energy from a living thing, however, I only connect.

Anyway..

A psychic vampire is someone who absorbs energy like its a drug. They don't feel good without that "high" specific energy gives them. Usually this is the energy of other people that are oblivious. They "sip" energy all day, and feel depressed or tired when they don't get their fix. Consistent draining of the same person can lead these victims to experience confusion, forgetfulness, depression, fatigue, illness and in extreme cases can lead to death (if the person is already seriously ill). Unintentional psychic vampires are not truly psi vamps. It is natural for us to draw from the energy around us when we are ill or damaged (mentally, physically, or spiritually). Unintentional psi vamps cannot cause illness. At most they cause temporary depression and fatigue because they take only from the aura.

If he is not absorbing it into himself, then he is definitely NOT a psi vampire. He is just a novice magick practioner that found a new trick and doesn't understand it. A "new age" form of magick called vampiric necromancy is much like what your friend does. But it is meant to make people ill, cause confusion, or break willpower. Your friend needs to do more research and not play around with things he doesn't understand. Someone can get hurt, even himself.

Mediumship is when you blend or mix energy with someone or something. A medium is a catalyst and interpreter of the energy they come in contact with, many times the energy of a spirit (in which case they can communicate). But they do not take energy, they connect and "share" energy temporarily.

You are just a solitairy magick practioner. Depending on how you were taught depends on what you may wish to call yourself. Not everyone likes to be called a witch.

Your friend...is a fool. I'm sorry to bear the bad news. Educate him please!

My friend is no fool, he came tome as soon as he saw the effect he came to me and I taught him how to limit what he takes. He has never abused this, he has worked with me, for a day once a week to control this.

What do you believe "fool" means? You just admitted he lacks the understanding of it. So you disagreed, to agree with me anyway. You don't even know what he is exactly doing, but had the common sense to be capable of teaching him how to limit it. Obviously, you have more experience/wisdom. However, I don't understand why it must be done at all. What is his gain from all of this if he drains and then doesn't absorb the energy?

By the way, I went ahead and took the curtesy of copy/pasting the definition so there isn't anymore confusion.
From www.thefreedictionary.com

fool n. 1. One who is deficient in judgment, sense, or understanding.

I'm sorry I offended you, but "stupid" is not the primary use of the word and where I come from, "fool" it not really taken as an insult.
