Deity

Hello everyone!
So I've had a few questions. In the past, it was revealed to our ancestors who the "deities" were, and their personalities & how the reacted to certain prayers or offerings. However, how was this knowledge revealed to them?
In the modern age, when people believe they're having a divinity revealed to them, they're criticized for being insane and their deity is wrote off as fake. So, how was this revealed?
