Christopher Penczak and Scott Cunningham are what I first read when I was starting. Penczak's books are set up like college courses on magick with lessons, quizzes, and references. Cunningham has a lot of good resources. I would start with his Book of Shadows, then one of his topical books like Earth,Air,Fire,&Water.

I would just read articles about starting and also buy books, like the person above said, Scott Cunningham has good ratings and some people think Silver Ravenwolf's books are good too, others don't. But uhm, just research, read read read & ask questions! PM me if you want, hope this helped!(:

Silver Ravenwolf is highly recommended against. The best thing you can do with her writings is mark out every thing wrong with them once you've learned a nice bit of info and practices.

My advice is to start with basic skills, practices, and studies (such as grounding, centering, energy manipulation, feeling energy, meditation, learning what magick is and how spells work, etc.). Once you have a good basis of such things you can then expand your studies and practices into a broader range of subjects. Tackle one thing at a time, or in appropriate pairings, so as not to be too overwhelmed. If you're getting overwhelmed you're tackling too much. Slow down and take your time, as there is no need to rush.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Vanitys Fire on the Silver Ravenwolf thing. She is great for teenagers who have a very Charmed view of magick. But if you want to know what's really going on, you need to do a lot more research.
