Casting a circle is for creating a "bubble" if you will. It keeps out things unwanted, and keeps this wanted, in. It keeps energies raised for your working inside until ready to be released. Its creating a space in which time and spaced in non existant. Depending on the tradition your following is how you cast it. You can set up candles, rocks, draw a circle, etc, or simply "see" the circle to cast it. You should always purify your space before casting. Call the Quarters,(if its your tradition). But you should always close the circle in order you opened it. Say you cast your circle, call the quarters and then invoke. After your working, you should thank the deities, bid farewell to the quarters, then close the circle.

A circle can be also used as protection against negative energies when working with them

I rarely Cast Circles when casting spells or crossing someone
When I practice High magick I always do
In my actual practice,I don't wish to block Angels or Demons from my space.I still have a Huge respect for Satan and His minions
You can cast one visually or with Chalk or Rope or anything
In Hoodoo we lay powders and throw salt and holy water
