When centered you should feel very aware of your surroundings and when grounded you should feel "heavy" in a sense, as if your body is firmly set on the ground. You're emotions should become extremely calm and your mind should be sharp and focused.

Okay, the thing is that when I meditate, I see or sense a range of colours and then finally settle on a reddy colour or violet.
When I tried to ground myself, my legs felt heavy and a little shaky.

What am i doing wrong?

You may just be trying too hard. Relax! And perhaps try a different method. Everyone has their own favorite way to ground and center. There are many methods out there. You may also be picking up on other energy that is effecting your ability to ground and center. Try casting a circle or simple protection of your choice and cleanse yourself before attempting to ground and center fully.

Thank you I have wondered if being tired has affected my concerntration. I am very active, I have two children both under five, a large home and a fairly indifferent partner and for some reason I avoid sleep like it's the plague.

You're welcome. I have a five year old myself. We avoid sleep because at night (when our child(ren) sleep(s)) is the only time we get to ourselves. I do that too. You need a break! Have a family member watch them for half a day and use that time to unwind and do something for yourself. It really helps, trust me.
