Witches,Wizards,Warlocks

I was wondering, what are the differences between witches, wizards, and warlocks.

I know what witches are because this site is for pople to learn magick and become witches, or whatever they wish to call themselves.

Wizards,(and this is just a guess)are like witches, and correct me if I am wrong(which I most likely am), but they are more ritualistic, and focus on different types of magick.

Warlocks, I hae no idea. In shows and books they're all bad witches pretty much, but I don't think that is correct, because they'd still be witches.

So, please reply and help me expand my knowledge of tis subject.

Please and Thank you :)

Witches practice magick related to nature and Earthly energies. Wizards (or magicians or quabbalistic priests) are, as you said, more ritualistic and use more arcane energies. Warlocks are usually defined as being evil sorcerers because the term 'warlock' means "oath breaker".

i tend not to give myself a title, because of the image we get, for example if you go to a person and say that you are a wizard, they would think you are looney and probably torment you for the rest of your life, however if i was going to give a title it would be occult practitioner :P, people tend to take you more seriously.

Witches is what some people use to call us, it still has meaning but to them it means that we worship Lucifer and are friends with demons and hate.

Wizards is what some of our own people like to call us, they help out other people with spells (rarely doing them just giving it to them)

And of course warlocks are the ones that left everything and work for their own greed, since magick is not like that it is a dishonored name.

In a few of my books tho, it means:
Wizards- This is from teh Anglo-Saxon wysard:"wise one." A wizard is a lore-master, especially of arcane knowledge. A wizard is also a magickal practitioner; however, the word is rarely used today to decribe a practitioner of wicca or a member of any particular faith. Indeed, most (but not all) wizards tend to be solitary, though they may belong to a wizardly council or order (it is not like the coven that pet is in). The most famous wizard of legend was merlin. While the cast majority of wizards throughout history have been men, there have been a few women wizards as well--such as maria the jewess and hypatia of alexandria.

Witches- In medieval europe and britain, "cunning women" were often called wicce--an anglo-saxon word meaning "shaper"-- from which we get our term "witch." This word, in turn, comes from middle high german wicken. Modern witches include both men and women, and much to their magick is directed towards healing, of people and the earth. Many witches also practice divination and magickal techniques for the evolution of consciousness.

Warlocks- I left this one for last, as it is a word very rarely used in magickal community. This old term of insult comes from Old English waer-loga: "traitor" or "liar." It once decribed a witch who betrayed others to the witch hunters, and it is often used erroneously by mundanes to refer to male witches. today, some wiccans may use the term for an initiated witch who turns against the Craft.

A very good question with a very good answer. Thank you for reviving this long dead thread, Carlo.

As for your question, yes, this is real. Magic is real, the terms are real, and this thread is real. However, magic is not as it appears to be in Hollywood or other movie media nor how it is described in books, magazines, and comics. Magick, the unofficially "proper" term for real "magic" that is not just an illusion, is much different.

The world "magic" is often used by real "magick" practitioners to define the difference between illusions(AKA: stage magic including hypnosis, card tricks, etc) like what Houdini and now this Cris Angel do and real magick like what Allister Crowley, real witches, real wizards, real warlocks, and other magick users would do(casting spells, performing rituals, etc).

If you are new to this, you can find the basics explained in various places on the site. I suggest you find a good coven and start learning. To name a few I recommend Deep Arts, Dragon Magick, Divine Spirits, or Spirit Seers, although these are not the only good ones. The few I would urge that you stay away from, and I mean no offense to anyone by saying this, include Baying Wolves, Vampiric Elegance, Spell Casters, Higher Magicks, and Twilight Vampires. While the members may be good, those five from what I have seen have lacked accurate information. Higher Magicks is possibly the best among those five, but that's speaking from a month or so ago when I had an account in that coven and it seemed to be quickly going down hill.

If you have any particular interests, there are a few that the covens I recommended do not cover, just send me a message and I will be happy to help you find a coven that meets your needs.

Sorry for double posting, but I just looked at your profile and I see you are already a member of Divine Spirits. That was a good a choice. If ever you feel like joining a different coven, however, I gathered from your profile that you are a Christian Wiccan and there is a coven for that called Christian Wiccans. But, I have never been in that coven and can not say whether or not their information is good nor can I say whether or not they are active. So far as I know Divine Spirits is probably best for you right now.
