I suggest that you study the German Commission E monographs. It's some of the best most current information out there. In many parts of Europe, herbalism is still widely practiced by doctors.

I concur, Scott Cunninghams Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs is one of the few books I would recommend to anyone interested in starting herbalism.

The other thing I would recommend is that you always learn the dangers of herbs before you use them, burn them, etc, a lot of herbs are dangerous if injested, burned or can cause skin issues.

I never really relied on any books to get me into herbalism. I just studied up on my favorite herbs. I know it doesn't go down the beaten path, but it's a good way to start out. I'm currently growing basil, rosemary, mint and sage. And make them into alot of things. Mostly oils.
