When casting spells, is it necessary to call on the help of specific Deities, or can you simply make the request and put it out to the 'universe'?

Deities aren't necessary during spellcasting. You can contact them through meditation, or through ritualistic practice. If your thinking of trying to summon one, you can't.

Deities are not required, though if you typically work with a certain pantheon or group of deities, certain ones are more suited for the asking of assistance than others are, depending on the spell/ritual you are doing.

It is ultimately a matter of personal belief an opinion. Not everyone has the same path nor the same beliefs on what is necessary and what is not. It depends soley on you.
