Casting A Circle

I want to preform a spell that requires a mirror to look into. Can I have the mirror outside of the circle and look into from the inside or would I have to enclose it in the circle?

I'm not really sure it makes much a difference in theory, but in effect it can symbolically or to your psyche. basically depends how much you care and whether you feel it's important.
