The Kokopelli

I was inspired to write this forum, because my mother brought back an amulet for me, and I absolutely love it. The amulet itself is a smooth, flat, rounded rectangular hematite. But what really caught my eye, was this strange little Native symbol of a man playing a flute. I had done some reasearch, and had found out it is a Kokopelli.

The Kokopelli.

A Kokopelli is a Native American God of Fertility, it is known for being a prankster, a healer, and a storyteller. Although his origins aren't very clear, he has been found carved into rock walls throughout the South West. He is also seen as the bringer of Spring, in which he arrived to villages playing his flute, melting the snow and bringing plants. Legend says, that if his flute was heard, every villager would dance and sing all night long, and the next morning every maiden would be with child.

Other names.

  • Kokopele.
  • Kokopeltiyo.
  • Kokopilau
  • Neopkwai'i(Pueblo)
  • Ololowishkya(Zuni)

Very cool you thought to post this. I live in the southwest and have seen this figure quite often. I knew it was Kokopeli, a flute player, but didn't know about what it represented. Thanks...

I always liked this image. I was also given one long ago by a friend who visited Arizona. Thank you for your post. =)

You're very welcome. I've always seen it whenever I'd go to certain museums or Indian ruins. It was very interesting to me, and now I have my very own "talisman" I like to call it. :)
