Are there any specific herbs I should know about and research? I just want to get a good basic idea on herbalism.

As strwb3rry suggested, find and study herbs in your local area, know their uses, know what they are in and out. This is a great way to get started on herbalism. There are thousands of herbs, and no herb is better than the other. They all have uses in medicine, or culture. I can recommend a few books for you:

Green Pharmacy by James Duke (phd?)

Rosemary Gladstars Herbal Recipes For Vibrant Health... by Rosemary Gladstar

Encyclopedia of Magickal Herbs by Scott Cunningham

The Way of Herbs by Michael Tierra

The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl

There are hundreds of other books which I am sure you can find, but these are great ones to start out with. I suggest picking up a few, or maybe finding them online.
