The circle is an energy construct created by the individual casting it. It serves two main purposes:

1. It keeps out any unwanted energies or beings while you are conducting your ritual.

2. It contains the energy one is raising for one's magical working until you are ready to release it.

Here are a couple of resources that I think you will find useful in learning how and why to go about casting a circle:

Remember that it is not always necessary to cast a circle in order to perform divination or simple spells. But knowing how and why to cast one is an important skill to obtain.

What I usually do when I am casting a circle is i use a wand/athame/sword and point first to the north then east then south then west. i call of their elements down from their respected directions then call spirit from within myself.

I cast circles a little bit differently to most.
I use my ritual staff to channel my energy while tracing my circle three times clockwise starting at North. Then to close the circle I recall the energy while tracing anti clockwise three times.

Hope this helps.
