I think the djinn are the same thing as daemons, which can be summoned by a magic user to do their bidding. Summoners can either present the daemon with an offering for their service, or use spells designed to enslave the daemon (which they do not take kindly to). The "genie in the bottle" is actually a daemon imprisoned by an upset summoner, their gratitude upon release is the "three wishes".

Can i justsay nothing will give you free wishes, so if you ever do come across something of that kind who is offering you a wish or wishes please be careful.

A daemon or jinn may be compelled to to do as you wish, and to aid you within matters spiritual and magical, be be wary of the terms of any bargain you strike when you are forcing it to aid you against its will.

Bartering is better, sometimes, when such entities are called and allowed to come of their own free will.

In any such case, it is best not to ask or demand frivolous things.

Genie/Djinn are Arabic folklore. As most "beliefs" in fanciful creatures are. The genie in the bottle is a story from The Thousand And One Nights, "The Thief Of Baghdad", translated by Sir Richard Burton. There are many such stories from Arabic. Aladdin,Ali Baba, etc. Of course, there are many who believe these stories! So, why not? There is always a little germ of truth in stories told around a camp fire; and these stories are thousands of years old.
