Keeping a thorough dream journal will help. Deep consideration will also.

Something else to consider is something I read about synchronicity: It is something which after it happens you decide was not a coincidence. And if you do decide it was just a coincidence, then it is your decision whether it was a synchronistic event.

That is, whether you believe a part of a dream was symbolically representative of a future event might only be interpreted as such after the event has happened.

However, you ma also pick up cues as to what is or is not a dream of something, and base your decisions on that.

I'd most definitely avoid confusing yourself. I sometimes do a google search and see if there's anything I relate to.

thats the thing i dont go on google...here ill give an example of my first... there was a boy and girl swimming and it was dark like late at night or early morning and then the girl gets sucked down in the water but the boy is left alone. a few days later my friend ashley died from being hit by a car and there was a guy who tried to save her he wound up being injured as well but survived
