What is Vodou?

Hey guys! I don't know a lot about Vodou, but I'd like to learn. I picked up a book about it in Books-A-Million and it was very interesting, but I had to keep putting it down due to my Christian dad continually walking by. So I'd like to know what Vodou is, not some Hollywood representation of it. What country it came from, who they worship, and some basic Vodou ritual. Thanks!

Actually to my memory the spanish took over the slave trade because Britain outlawed slavery. The African slaves which were being captured coming from the land of Sudan and Ethiopia then being shipped to the west coast countrys of Africa practiced the faith of the Orishas. Eventually when this slave trade ended they mainly ended up staying in Yoruba but their place of Origin was Sudan and Ethiopia. In the bible you can see a city named after their goddess Oshun a fertility goddess used for the cult of pharoah to this day and is heavily veiled; the name of the city which bares the name Oshun is what is known as Goshen because of various translations which was a great place for the Israelites to have their livestock because it grew crops and cow dung made excellent fertilizer for the field. Well anyways when the spanish took them on their ships to be sold in the new world, Catholicism was forced upon them. They wanted to keep their knowledge and practice so they called Jesus Yemeyah and Mary Oshun took their other Gods and Goddesses and gave them Christian names so they could practice their art in secret. For those who want proof here it https://books.google.com/books?id=TMZMAgAAQBAJ&pg=RA4-PA320&lpg=RA4PA320&dq=Catholic+slave+boat+storm&source=bl&ots=ghVZBixJTq&sig=Ns11djAWa1uba5prU9KCK_HkmNg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CDAQ6AEwB2oVChMI_tOblJTPyAIVRCqICh3grAMi#v=onepage&q=Catholic%20slave%20boat%20storm&f=false
