7 Chakras

Where does the belief of the 7 Chakras come from?
I've been researching them for awhile now but haven't found evidence for their existence. Such as some articles go on like it's all actual fact without backing up what they're saying. It's like they are getting their information from someone else without actually experiencing it themselves and then posting it.
Can someone explain to me where the belief comes from?
Also is it possible to prove it?

There are actually many more chakras in the energetic system which underlies the body. 7 major ones is popular in many Hindu philosophical texts but was promulgated largely by the Theosophical society, and adopted by many members of the Western Mystery Tradition.

There is no proof, other than subjective experience of the individual, of the chakras existing.

The belief comes from Hindu philosophy and esoteric beliefs; some books you may wish to read are "The Serpent Power" by Arthur Avalon/ Sir John Woodroffe and the "Shiva Samhita".

It would be impossible to prove it except to your individual self.
