well that's a rather shallow, mundane, and all to human view.

all natural objects have energies in them. they can adapt or apply that according to their environmental influences.

look up "animism"

As was said, all things in nature are believed by many to have "spirit" or energy with life, therefore they have emotion and thought but not exactly as we do. Animism is the name for this belief. But man-made materials lack that life because they take natural things, and "kill" them in a way by taking them apart and reconstructing them into something new. Plastic for example is a "dead" material. If we cut a flower, that flower will still remain alive for some time. But if we burn that flower, it is no longer alive nor have the same appearance or energy it once had. That energy leaves into the air, which is why the smoke of resins, woods, and plant material are burned to be used for their smoke in magick. It is the essence of their energy in that smoke. But once it is gone it returns to the elements (earth and air) that it came from.
