Depression and meditation

I have pretty severe depression (for which I am seeking treatment). I've tried meditating a few times, and it just made me feel bad (though relaxed). Am I doing it wrong? I've read it's supposed to help.

Any help is appriciated. Thanks.

Depression is a Medical condition you cant fix it with meditation as far as I know. Consult a doctor.

Okay, a little revelation here. Being a combat veteran, I experience great depression at times. Meditation is a part of my daily ritual and it helps tremendously.

The key to this is what you focus on, where you allow your mind to go, and frame of mind you have when you begin.

Practice when you are feeling the least depressed, focus on a pleasent memory or a hopeful future, and only allow your mind to expand within the limits of that thought.

Yes, depression is a chemical-biological issue (endocrinology, if you care to study it), but can very effectively be handled with meditation.

And practices which channel anger, be it art, meditation, journaling, martial arts, poetry, etc., since depression is anger turned inward on yourself.

Ok, how long and what medications were you on was it from a Doctor? self medication doesn't work.

Secondly, meditation,requires practise, it takes an effort to quiet your mind and opening up to your minds Eye.
there is no over night cure for Depression.

I am in treatment, and I am on medication, but medication doesn't just make the problem go away.

I've been following your advice folks, and I really appriciate it. It was hard at first, but I think I've gotten the hang of it; now all I need is practice.
