the first book i read that made me see wicca was the path for me was a book called 'Wicca for Life' i forget the authors name, but all my friends refer to it as 'the green book' look for a book with a tree in the four stages through the year. [and it's green of course]

the spells i started with were candle spells, they're pretty simple and straight foreward

Many people who wish to formally become Wiccan, perform a dedication ritual, wherein they dedicate themselves to the Lord and Lady and to a period of study usually, a year and a day. After this period the Dedicant is either initiated into a Coven or if solitary performs a self-initiation ritual.

Before you committ ask yourself what you want to accomplish. I practice all sorts of magic but I am not a wiccan more like a syncretist because wicca has limitations that I can't accept plus
I like having the freedom to use all that works. I believe all Deities and spirits desire honor and respect but I refuse to put
one above the other which in my mind would limit what I can do.

Wicca (with a capital W) was formulated by Gerald Gardner in his book Witchcraft Today, published in the early 1950s. Before 1951 witchcraft was against the law in the UK. Witchcraft, of course, is very much older than that! At least 35 thousand years. But the name Wicca is Gardner. Anyone wanting to be Wiccan should study Gardner.

Cordelia the answer is simple, read anything and everything you can put your hands on concerning Wicca. Surround yourself in its history, methods, and practice. There is no spell or ritual needed to start learning and practicing Wicca. In many physical Covens members will go through dedication and initiation rituals, which are particular to that group and practice.

On your own you can begin simply by learning on your own accord. Books by Raymond Buckland, Janet & Stewart Farrar, and Scott Cunningham can be excellent authors to get started with. All are well known in the Wiccan community. The list of "basics" that you will hear everyone repeat a little too often are another way to get started here on SOM.

Always remember to cross reference any information you stumble upon (meaning check it against various sources), question everything. Use your own common sense, chances are if it sounds far-fetched then it usually is. Other than that welcome to a new world, anytime you have questions we will all be right here. ;)
